One of the disorders related to hormone production is hypothyroidism. Is the hypothyroidism the enemy of fertility? We'll tell you all about it below.
Diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis or premature ovarian failure affect a woman's chances of conceiving since they affect the production and development of hormones and this has repercussions on the production and quality of the eggs.
Hypothyroidism is one of the thyroid function disorders by which the thyroid gland decreases its regulatory and hormone-producing activity, which is necessary to balance the metabolism and help burn excess fat by effectively regulating the energy level. The thyroid gland produces, stores and releases hormones that influence the activity of almost every cell in the body and control metabolism.
Hypothyroidism can cause a heart rate drop, bowel movements, weight gain and depression, among others. Women are up to 10 times more likely to suffer from it than men, and it can occur in all phases of pregnancy, as well as in the period before or during menopause.
The most common cause of hypothyroidism is thyroiditis, which is caused by a disorder of the immune system, in which antibodies are created and attack the thyroid gland.
Hypothyroidism is a disorder that can be hard to detect because some of its symptoms are easily confused with those of other disorders:
- Cholesterol
- Fatigue and drowsiness
- Joint and muscle pain
- Abnormal menstrual periods
- Weight gain
- Decreased libido
If it is not detected early, hypothyroidism could affect fertility in both men and women.
According to numerous scientific publications, hypothyroidism and infertility are related up to the extent that, if not detected in time, infertility could be one of the symptoms that indicates the possibility of suffering from hypothyroidism.
Hypothyroidism causes ovarian dysfunction and alterations in the hypothalamus-hypophysis thyroid axis. It is also associated with recurrent miscarriages and gestational loss during the first trimester of pregnancy. Likewise, women with hypothyroidism often suffer menstrual alterations and anovulation.
The answer is yes. To correct the disorder, the endocrinologist administers thyroid hormones until you have a good TSH, below 2.5 to stabilize hormone levels and ensure that implantation occurs without problems or risks.
If hormone regulation has not restored the levels, it will be necessary to resort to assisted reproduction techniques such as in vitro fertilization and maintain a series of periodic reviews to check the progress of the treatment.
