Nowadays, infertility can be attributed to many causes, but one of them, nearly unknown and often overlooked but increasingly observed, is probably obesity.
According to data provided by the WHO (World Health Organization), which describes obesity and overweight as a pandemic, 39% of adults are overweight and 13% of them show signs of obesity.
We all know that maintaining an optimum weight is vital in order to prevent a large number of diseases, to stay healthy and, in the worst of cases, to be able to cope with diseases in the best possible way; only sometimes we forget that maintaining good habits and the correct weight is also very important if we want to get pregnant and, then, that pregnancy proceeds without complications.
In this sense, it should be pointed out that one of the factors that increase the most the time and/or number of attempts needed to finally get pregnant is obesity or overweight, as obese women often find it difficult to achieve it naturally.
Actually, the rates of implantation and pregnancy are lower, the higher the woman body mass index is. In addition, the risk of complications during pregnancy and childbirth, as well as abortion rates, are much higher in overweight women.
This is why, before seeking pregnancy or starting any fertility treatment, it is very important that patients with overweight problems follow a plan to change and correct poor eating habits so to lose weight first.
