What role does acupuncture play in the world of fertility?

We have already told you on other occasions the great importance of complementary therapies, such as acupuncture, reflexology or nutrition, to increase the chances of pregnancy in those women who, after a long time of trying, cannot get pregnant. On this occasion, we want to talk to you about acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine technique that is closely linked to fertility and assisted reproduction treatments.

Through the insertion of needles in different specific parts of the body, the flow of energy is balanced. The needles are very fine and their length usually varies, depending on the area in which they are going to be punctured. Thanks to this therapy, diseases can be treated, especially chronic ones, such as arthritis, migraine or hormonal disorders; and also emotional problems, such as stress and anxiety.

This therapy was born from the thought that our body is made up of energy accumulated in the meridians. When the energy is unbalanced at any point, it becomes inflamed and causes symptoms such as pain or fatigue. Therefore, it is necessary to rebalance energy, facilitate its circulation and create anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in the body.

So, what benefits can be obtained through acupuncture? Well, it is a therapy that reduces inflammation in areas of the body, such as the articular, which is why it is very valuable for those who suffer from arthritis or osteoarthritis. It also improves blood flow, eliminates toxins, enhances the production of some hormones and regulates them, but it also relaxes the body and mind.

Acupuncture and fertility, what is their relationship?

In the last decade, acupuncture has had, and clearly continues to have, a great influence on fertility. For this reason, it is a complementary therapy widely used in assisted reproduction clinics, more specifically, in those cases in which IVF has to be carried out.

But why is acupuncture so effective in this sense? It is believed to be closely related to changes in uterine flow and uterine motility. In addition, it is a very effective treatment to combat stress or improve our sleep, aspects that, as you know, greatly affect fertility. But, acupuncture also helps treat those body mechanisms that cause morphological changes, regulating fertility hormones, improving the quality of oocytes, and increasing blood flow in the pelvic region and in the reproductive organs, as our acupuncturist Cristina Mora, from Balanced Living, tells us.
Thus, those women who suffer, during their search for pregnancy, frequent and repetitive implantation failures, endometriosis, abortions, diseases such as PCOS or women with low reserve or poor quality of oocytes, or unknown sterility problems, are the most suitable patients to put themselves in the hands of an acupuncturist.

Acupuncture increases up to 65% the chance of conceiving

Acupuncture is also a very relevant medicine to go to after the transfer of an embryo to the woman’s uterus, since it helps to have a much more balanced and strong system. As our collaborator Cristina rightly states, this factor is probably the most important in acupuncture and in the world of fertility.
Our expert recommends doing about five sessions during a woman’s IVF process (two or three sessions during ovarian stimulation, and one or two sessions after embryo transfer until the result is known.

Acupuncture in male fertility

Did you know that male fertility can also be treated through acupuncture? This technique manages to stimulate spermatogenesis. What do we mean? Well, to the formation of sperm. But this is not the only advantage for men, by betting on acupuncture they can reduce stress levels, which in many cases can cause DNA fragmentation.
