In recent days, media across Europe have reported on a case involving a sperm donor whose genetic mutation was linked to serious health complications of children born in several European countries. Understandably, this news has raised concerns among women and couples who are considering, or have already undergone, assisted reproduction treatments using donor sperm.

At Reproclinic, patient safety, transparency, and trust are fundamental values. For this reason, we would like to clearly explain how sperm donation is regulated, how donors are selected at our clinic, and why our patients can feel confident and safe throughout their treatment.

Understanding the Case Reported in the Media

The reported case involved a donor from Denmark whose sperm was distributed through a European sperm bank. Importantly, Reproclinic does not collaborate with this sperm bank, nor do we source donor sperm from it.

How Donor Sperm Is Selected at Reproclinic

At Reproclinic, we exclusively work with authorized Spanish sperm banks that operate under strict national legislation. All donor sperm used in our treatments complies fully with Spanish and European legal and medical standards.

Specifically, donor selection and screening follow:

  • Law 14/2006 on Assisted Reproduction Techniques

  • Royal Decree 1301/2006, which regulates the organization, operation, and accreditation of tissue and cell banks, including gamete and embryo donation

These laws establish rigorous requirements for donor eligibility, medical and genetic testing, traceability, and quality control.

Comprehensive Donor Screening and Ongoing Oversight

All sperm donors undergo an extensive screening process that includes:

  • Detailed personal and family medical history

  • Physical and psychological evaluation

  • Infectious disease testing

  • Genetic screening in accordance with Spanish regulations

Only donors who meet all medical, genetic, and legal criteria are accepted. Authorized sperm banks are subject to regular audits and oversight to ensure continued compliance with these standards.

Your Safety Comes First

Cases like the one discussed in the media can be alarming, but they also reinforce the importance of working within a highly regulated medical framework.

At Reproclinic, we carefully select our partners, follow all legal requirements to ensure the highest possible level of safety for our patients and their future children.
