10 Sep International Gynecological Awareness Day
International Gynecological Awareness Day, celebrated on September 10th each year, is an initiative started by Kath Mazzella, a vulval cancer survivor with a noble mission: to transform the global landscape of gynecological and sexual health, and to help women not only survive, but also thrive. Alongside her husband, she has earned numerous awards for her impactful work over the years.
How this idea came to fruition, though, was quite peculiar. Following her surgery, Kath realized that women didn’t feel confident enough to talk about issues “down there”, which resulted in many of them suffering in silence. She then came up with the idea to place an advertisement in a local women’s magazine to share her own experience. This small act of kindness allowed her to connect with many others who shared similar experiences, which eventually led to her establishing a not-for-profit organization run by volunteers, dedicated to women’s health.
In honor of this initiative, we would like to dedicate this blog to the importance of visiting your gynecologist on a regular basis. Nowadays, it’s very easy to get wrapped in our routine and say we don’t have time for our routine checkups. But the truth is, even if you’re perfectly healthy, you still need a checkup to ensure you’re on the right path. And if you’re experiencing issues with your reproductive system, such as heavy bleeding, intense cramps, or infertility, a visit with a gynecologist will help you discover the root cause of your problem.
Now that we’ve established that regular gynecological checkups are a “must”, that begs the question: how do we choose our gynecologist? Since we’re discussing our most intimate health issues with them, our gynecologist must be someone who not only inspires confidence in us, but also has years of experience. Our first instinct could be to ask our female friends or relatives, but what if we’re experiencing other types of issues? In this case, it might be a better idea to ask our general practitioner for some recommendations.
Once we have a few gynecologists to choose from, we can start researching a bit more about them, such as what they specialize in, how long have they been practicing their profession, what the average wait time for an appointment is, and if they have recently been getting good reviews online. If your case is more complex, such as not being able to become pregnant, it might be better to contact a fertility clinic directly, as most of them have a network of gynecologists that they work with, who have followed hundreds of cases similar to yours. This summer, at Reproclinic we’re offering FREE standard lab tests at the beginning of your fertility treatment, as well as a complete diagnosis provided FREE of charge, and a €200 voucher, if you trust us with your biggest dream: that of starting a family.
But perhaps not all of you are wishing to become pregnant right away. Women nowadays delay motherhood for a number of reasons, some prefer to focus on building their career while they’re still young, others simply don’t have a stable partner at the moment. Whatever the reason, modern medicine now allows young women to freeze their eggs, so that they always have a plan B if things don’t work out in the future. Fertility preservation is a wonderful solution for all women who wish to outsmart their biological clock, as they’ll have the opportunity to get pregnant by using their healthier eggs from when they were younger.
The ideal candidates for egg freezing are not only women postponing motherhood or those who are currently single, but also women who have a low ovarian reserve and who would like to accumulate oocytes for a future IVF cycle, as well as women with an oncological diagnosis, before chemotherapy. One of our missions in 2023 is to help even more women to secure their future family planning, which is why we offer a 50% discount on the 2nd egg freezing cycle, if you do 2 consecutive ones until the end of the year. As a bonus, you’ll be able to enjoy 5 years of egg freezing storage for FREE, which normally costs over €2000.
