Yoga for fertility

What is yoga for fertility? Can regular asana practices help you increase your chances of having a baby? To answer these questions, start by discovering what yoga is.

What is yoga?

Yoga is a mental and physical discipline that originated in India. It is said to be more than 5,000 years old. Today there are different aspects, depending on whether you’re working on breathing, meditation or postures (asanas). New types of yoga are even being developed to treat different disorders, such as yoga for fertility.

Among yoga’s main benefits include:

  • Develop physical strength
  • Correct posture
  • Increase flexibility
  • Improve physical and mental endurance
  • Find the balance between body and mind
  • Activate blood circulation
  • Detoxify the organism
  • Stimulate the immune system
  • Relax the mind

Those who practice it affirm that the benefits of yoga do not occur only on a physical level, but also mentally and spiritually. Its ultimate goal is to integrate body, mind and spirit.

What is the relationship between stress and infertility?

More and more couples in the world suffer from infertility. Either by an increase in the age of the woman to conceive, by external factors, by reproductive disorders … To this we add that women who go through a fertility treatment can experience higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression.

It is not known with certainty if stress can cause infertility in itself. But it is believed that it can interfere with the women ovulatory cycles.

A recent study published in The American Journal of Epidemiology concluded that stress could directly affect female fertility, hindering pregnancy.

Although it is not known exactly how stress affects our ability to conceive, it is believed that cortisol is the reason.  Cortisol is the hormone our body releases when we are stressed. This hormone can interfere with the reproductive hormones responsible for ovulation.

One of the main causes of female infertility comes from a malfunction of ovulation and stress can aggravate this problem.

How can yoga help fertility?

Yoga relaxes the body and mind, making it an excellent ally to combat stress. Recent publications claim that regular yoga practice can decrease stress in women by up to 20%. This could increase the chances of pregnancy.

People who favor yoga for fertility also claim that certain postures and breathing exercises stimulate the reproductive system in men and women. Energy flows, the blood circulation is reactivated… And all this balances our hormonal functioning.

In addition, it increases the sensation of fullness, which can help us to recover the libido and the body’s predisposition for reproduction.

Yoga for fertility

Yoga for fertility postures give relevance to the strengthening of the pelvic area, allowing the energy to flow while unblocking the area, which favors the regulation of the hormonal and ovulatory cycle.

Yoga for fertility also improves blood circulation in the reproductive organs.

Hatha yoga is considered the best for fertility, since its movements are slower and more fluid. Respiratory techniques help women find balance and “asanas” improve circulation.

New styles of yoga for fertility are being developed, such as hormonal yoga. According to its creators, it helps women with polycystic ovary syndrome, low hormone production, muscular tensions… This type of yoga, which is starting to become popular in the United States, should be practiced 3 to 4 times a week for at least 4 months .

It is based on dynamic postures and breathing techniques that seek to increase the circulation of energies and reactivate our body and relax the mind.

In conclusion…

Yoga is a philosophy that unites the care of the body and mind, providing physical and emotional well-being to the yogi. A woman who stays in inner balance and who maintains a healthy lifestyle, with regular exercise, is more likely to conceive.

The main benefit that yoga provides for fertility is the reduction of stress. Mental and corporal relaxation can help women to relax and better tolerate hormonal treatments.

Of course, yoga by itself will not make you pregnant or solve serious reproductive problems that need medical help. However, it can help improve the mood and physical state of women, increasing their chances of conceiving, when combined with an assisted reproduction treatment.
