What is an inverted uterus and how does it affect fertility?

By Reproclinic Editorial Committee

Every woman is different and her reproductive system may vary. For example, between 20% and 30% woman have the inverted uterus and, despite sharing this uniqueness, they may not share the same clinical diagnosis. But, how does this affect fertility?

Having the uterus inverted or in retroversion means that the uterus leans and is supported on the back, on the spine. Normally should be towards the abdomen, so it is just in the opposite position.

What does it mean to have the uterus in retroversion?

20% or 30% of women with this type of uterus do not have to experience any symptoms. It doesn’t really manifest explicitly. What it can produce is that the pelvic ligaments weaken the moment menopause arrives.

In other cases, some women may experience lower back pain during menstruation. Also, some women may experience constipation just before menstruation, since it can double in size.

For that reason the rectum has to bear a much greater weight, and hence when changes are made to the bathroom. Another of these changes could be that of urinary incontinence. By leaning on the bladder the uterus that has increased in size prevents urine from leaking out and that is why fluid retention occurs.

Does it affect fertility?

The position of the uterus does not alter fertility at all. So yes, a woman with the reverse uterus can get pregnant. Yes, it is true that in normal position facilitates access to sperm and that in an inverted position slightly increases the difficulty of the path of these.

In addition, women who have the uterus in retroversion have to know that once they get pregnant it naturally changes position forward, as a result of their own weight.

To consider…

It is important to know that if the inverted uterus can cause problems to conceive in case there is pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis. This occurs when the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus grows outside it, such as in the ovaries, intestines …

However, these cases are detectable by gynecological exams and have a solution, so it is important to see a doctor at the recommended periodicity and when symptoms or bothersome ailments are experienced.
