Acupuncture and fertility

Currently, there are many specialists who recommend acupuncture as a complement to a fertility treatment.

During an In Vitro Fertilization, the woman must undergo numerous injections to stimulate the production of eggs. And, surely, the last thing you want is to receive more punctures. But, after reading this post, surely you will agree with us that some other needles may be worth it.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture originated in China around 100 BC. It has been practiced in Asian countries for thousands of years. Nowadays, it is a very widespread practice also in the western world. Both as an alternative therapy, and as a complement to other treatments.

Acupuncture encompasses a set of techniques that involve the stimulation of certain points of the body using various techniques. It is a form of alternative medicine based on the insertion of very fine needles at specific points. It is mainly used to relieve pain, but it also treats a broad spectrum of diseases. Those who use it claim to notice a general improvement in their quality of life.

This technique seeks to stimulate the natural capacity of our bodies to heal.

How does acupuncture work?

According to traditional Chinese medicine, there are channels in our body where energy flows. These channels (called “meridians”), flow throughout our body irrigating and nourishing our organs. It is believed that when these channels interrupt their flow they cause physical and emotional diseases, including infertility. Pressing on specific points can unlock and stimulate these meridians to release the flow of energy.

On the other hand, for scientists, the theories revolve around the fact that by puncturing certain points, the body releases chemicals and hormones that alter the perception of pain. This release can influence the body’s own internal regulation system, propitiating its natural ability to heal. It is also proven that acupuncture improves physical and emotional well-being, since it releases beta-endorphins (well-being hormones).

Acupuncture and fertility

Unlike other alternative therapies, acupuncture has been gaining acceptance in the West as scientific studies and the experiences of millions of people reinforced its benefits.

There are numerous studies that have shown the benefits of acupuncture on fertility. According to recent studies, there can be up to a 65% chance of pregnancy when combining IVF and acupuncture. Similarly, studies show that the rate of live births almost doubled when acupuncture was used, compared to IVF patients who did not receive it.

How does acupuncture help with In Vitro Fertilization?

Although it’s not exactly known, ultrasounds show that acupuncture can help regulate hormone levels. In addition, it also improves the blood flow in reproductive organs, increasing uterine and ovarian vascularization. This could create a better environment for embryo implantation.

Furthermore, most specialists seem to agree that acupuncture can have a calming effect on patients. And as you may know, stress plays a decisive role in any fertility treatment.

According to acupuncture supporters, to take advantage of all its effects, sessions should begin about two or three months before fertility treatment. It is also stated that a session should be held on the same day as the embryo transfer to favor its implantation. For this reason, some fertility clinics have begun to incorporate acupuncturists into their staff.

If your clinic does not offer these services, it is important to find an acupuncturist with experience in patients who suffer from fertility problems. This way, the acupuncturist will know how to find the exact points on which he/she should influence.

Acupuncture is not a guarantee that your IVF cycle will work, but it can be a natural way to increase your chances of success and relieve stress. Maintaining a positive mental attitude during your fertility treatment is critical!

Is acupuncture painful? What risks are there?

The needles that are inserted during an acupuncture session do not look anything like sewing needles or injections. They are very thin, solid and have no cutting edge. In addition, they are inserted at a superficial level of the skin. For these reasons, most patients feel nothing, just a slight sensation of tingling or heat. All needles used in acupuncture are disposable and sterile so there is no risk of infection.

The benefits of acupuncture have been recognized by the World Health Organization. If you perform your treatment with a qualified and experienced acupuncturist, the side effects are minimal or null.

Do not forget that no treatment, medical or alternative, will take any effect if you do not make a change in your lifestyle. You should let go bad habits before trying to get pregnant, follow a balanced diet and perform moderate exercise.
